David Thomas

David has spent the last five years working and developing educational relationships for CIBT Education Group in China. He is currently living and working for CIBT Education Group in Vancouver Canada. While stationed in Beijing, David traveled throughout China. David holds a BA in Chinese History, MBA in International Business, and his PhD dissertation topic relates to the in-depth study of China's education system and the regulatory environment foreign institution must face while providing foreign programs within China. David was formally an Assistant Professor at Doane College (a university) in the United Sates (a tier-1 institution) and was named teacher of the year, and formerly Associate Vice President for International Development at City University in Seattle. David helped found one of the first MBA programs in China between City University and Beijing University of Technology, managed by CIBT China. David was formerly Director of Trade for the World Trade Center with a focus on Mexico and helped draft the NAFTA trade agreement between the United States and Mexico. David was also a Military Analyst for 20 years with the United States Government. David's academic interests focus on international business and marketing and their application between the West and Asia. David is also a distinguished and accomplished Chinese landscape painter and interestingly holds a level 5 (5th degree) back-belt in Korean TaeKwonDo. Thomas has provided speeches throughout China on the challenges of teaching ESL, Western-China educational differences, and understanding China-Western cross-cultural communications. David first came to China in 1978.

 

 

Sir John Daniel

Sir John Daniel is one of the world’s most eminent practitioners and thinkers in open, distance and technology mediated learning. He has helped to progress the international development agenda in education globally and has been a distinguished leader of universities and intergovernmental organisations in Canada, France and the United Kingdom.  A citizen of both Canada and the UK, he was knighted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for services to higher education in 1994 and holds 31 honorary doctorates from universities in 17 countries.

Sir John Daniel obtained his full-time university education in Metallurgy at the Universities of Oxford and Paris and later demonstrated his commitment to lifelong learning by taking 25 years to complete a part-time Master's degree in Educational Technology at Concordia University. The internship for this programme, which took him to infant UK Open University in 1972, was a life-changing experience. He saw the future of higher education and wanted to be part of it.

This career took Sir John on an international odyssey with appointments at the Télé-université, Québec (Directeur des Études, 1973-77); Athabasca University, Alberta (Vice-President for Learning Services, 1978-80); Concordia University, Montreal (Vice-Rector, Academic, 1980-84); Laurentian University, Ontario (President, 1984-90); the UK Open University (Vice-Chancellor, 1990-2001); UNESCO, Paris (Assistant Director-General for Education, 2001-04); and the Commonwealth of Learning, Vancouver (President and CEO, 2004-2012).  His non-executive appointments have included the presidencies of the International Council for Open and Distance Education, the Canadian Association for Distance Education and the Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education. He also served as Vice-President of the International Baccalaureate Organisation. He is currently Education Master with the Beijing DeTao Masters Academy, China.

Among Sir John's 320 publications are his books Mega-Universities and Knowledge Media: Technology Strategies for Higher Education (Kogan Page, 1996) and Mega-Schools, Technology and Teachers: Achieving Education for All (Routledge, 2010).

Dr. Glen Farrell

 Derek Feng

Mr. Feng graduated from Tsinghua University in China with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, followed by a Master of Business Administration degree from University of California, Los Angeles in 1992. Between 1992 and 1999, Mr. Feng held several finance and operational roles at Enron, worked in an investment banking firm, and was a manager in the strategic planning group at United Technologies Corporation.

In 1999, Mr. Feng joined the General Electric Company (“GE”) in Connecticut as Manager of Americas Business Development at GE Capital, and was later promoted to the position of Managing Director, Global Business Development at GE Equipment Management, and then further promoted to General Manager, Global Business Development at GE Infrastructure. Two years later, Mr. Feng became the Global Head of Business Development at GE Industrial, a US$33 billion revenue division that has operating businesses ranging from high tech instruments to equipment leasing. Mr. Feng was also an officer of GE Capital Corporation, the largest non-bank financial services company in the world with over US$600 billion in assets. During his tenure at GE, he evaluated hundreds of acquisitions, dispositions, minority investments and joint venture opportunities globally and completed over US$10 billion worth of transactions. In addition, he oversaw a number of strategy projects ranging from growth to restructuring as well as joint ventures.

In 2006, Mr. Feng left GE and became the Executive Vice President of Strategy, Planning and Operations at Knowledge Universe, one of the largest education holding company in the world with a network of more than 3,000 locations worldwide, employing over 40,000 education professionals, operating early childhood education centers, international schools, colleges, large on-line schools and school management systems.

In 2011, Mr. Feng left Knowledge Universe to become an investor and advisor to education companies that have significant growth opportunities benefiting from the increasing globalization of education between Asia and North America.

 

 

During the past 3 decades Dr. Farrell has held a variety of executive and strategic positions which have enabled him to contribute to the development of today’s open learning education model in Canada and internationally. He has held both administrative and academic appointments in Canada at the Universities of Saskatchewan and Victoria and was the founding President and CEO of the Open Learning Agency (OLA) in British Columbia - a comprehensive distance education organization that included the BC Open University and the Knowledge Network. As President of the OLA, he was active in organizations such as the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, the Council of Western Canadian University Presidents and the Association for the Tele-Education in Canada. He retired from the OLA in 1998 to establish a consulting practice that has focused on the use of learning technologies, and the management of innovative education organizations in developing countries.

Dr. Farrell has served on the governing board of Saskatchewan Tel, Royal Roads University, Pacific Rim Institute for Tourism, Elderhostel Canada and has provided consulting and project management services to such international development organizations as UNESCO, the Commonwealth of Learning, the e-Africa Commission, the World Bank and the World Health Organization as well as a variety of institutions and government ministries around the world. He is currently the chairman of the Sprott-Shaw Degree College Academic Council and continues to be active with several community organizations.

Dr. Farrell holds a B.Sc. in agriculture and an L.L.D. (Hon.) from the University of Saskatchewan as well as Master of Science and PhD degrees in adult education from the University of Wisconsin and is the author of numerous papers on the development and practice of distance education and e-learning. His research activities have included the documentation of the use of information and communication technologies in education in Canada, the Asia Pacific countries, and in all countries of Africa. He also led a team of experts that was commissioned by the Commonwealth of Learning to develop a proposal for a virtual university to serve the small states of the Commonwealth.
