GUCIBT Co-organized 2013 Guangdong’s Fifth College Students English Interpretation Contest

On 21st December, the 2013 Guangdong’s Fifth College Students English Interpretation Contest was held in Guangzhou University. The interpretation contest was hosted by Guangdong Institute for Foreign Languages, organized by School of Foreign Studies, and co-organized by CIBT International College and Lancoo Group.

The contest was held in the conference hall on the second floor of the Administrative West Building in the HEMC Campus of Guangzhou University with the splendor of the occasion unprecedented. The contest invited 10 nationwide well-known experts to be the judges, including Yong Heming, the Vice-president and professor of Guangdong University of Business Studies, Professor Wang Chuming, the member of the Discipline Appraisal Panel of the State Council and the professor of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Lu Daofu, the Standing Deputy Director of Guangzhou University-Wesleyan College American Cultural Center and the professor of School of Foreign Studies of Guangzhou University, and etc. The strong team of judges ensured the contest to be high-level as well as highly competitive, and the result to be fair and equitable.

The participants were mainly from the ten ordinary undergraduate universities and ten independent colleges/ vocational colleges in Guangdong Province. Therefore, the contest consisted of two groups, the university group and the college group, and the contests of the two groups were held respectively in the morning and in the afternoon. In the warm atmosphere within the contest hall, all of the contestants performed excellently, representing the huge success of Guangdong’s foreign language education and the study spirits of the students majored in foreign language. This was the finale of the interpretation contest, composed of three parts which were English to Chinese, Chinese to English and the mutual interpretation between two languages. Three contestants were sent from each of the teams of universities/colleges to undertake one of the interpretation tasks.

The contest, ending in a complete success, was greatly effective in achieving the activity aims of further promoting the reform and development of the English teaching of our province, improving the interpretation ability and comprehensive quality of the students majored in English, and enhancing the communication and friendship among teachers and students of school/major of foreign study from different universities and colleges.The winner of the contest was the representative from Sun Yat-sen University and Guangzhou University won the second place of the university group with an excellent mark!

Throughout the contest, CIBT International College not only coordinated well with the work of the host and the organizer, made the rightful contribution to the smooth progress and the complete success of the contest, but also enhanced the friendship and communication between CIBT and other higher education institutions in Guangdong. In the future, CIBT will continue to undertake this kind of large collaborative contest among universities and colleges, in order to better understand the current situation and development of English education as well as students’ situation and needs to constantly improve the teaching level of EEP in CIBT.
